The negative impacts of mobile phones on people
For my exam theme I have chosen the topic "The Information Age". Before I did anything else, I made sure I researched ideas for this theme. There were lots of different ideas which came to me during my research time. However, a running pattern which looked interesting was the idea that technology is controlling the lives of modern day individuals. I kept seeing photographers images of mobile phones impacting the lives of people in a negative manner. The whole world is revolved around TV, computers and phones. We always just think of the positive impacts since it's what makes the world go around these days. But what about the negative ones? I had a look on Pinterest to find artists and photographers who are inspired by the contradiction of the technical world. I found so many inspiring images that made me think of mobile phones in a way that I hadn't really portrayed them before.
The images spoke to me which is why I have decided to try and reflect these views through my photographs and make people stop and think about whether they are unnoticeably being controlled by the information age. At first I thought about doing my project about all types of technology, however I really liked the idea of phones. Phones are what most people are controlled by; they are taking over everyones lives. I would say that in a way, I am addicted to my phone, but I have never really thought about what it's doing to me and the effects it has on myself and also the people around me. Everywhere I go I take my phone with me, I feel incomplete without it, just like many other people do. It is as if this modern piece of amazement has become one the main keys in my life, and although it is a spectacular piece of technology, it really is taking its toll on mine and so many other individuals lives in a scary way.
I have researched some shocking facts about mobile phones to give me some inspiration for my own shoots. Seeing some of these facts and realising that they are actually real is quite eye opening:
1. In 2012, Apple sold more than 340,000 I-Phones per day, which is around 1 every 4 seconds
2. Around 80% of the worlds population have a mobile phone.

4. More than 4 billion people use mobile phones, but only 3.5 billion use a toothbrush.
5. The mobile phone industry is the fastest growing industry in the world.
6. 90% of mobile phones in Japan are waterproof because youngsters are so addicted that they use them in the shower.
7. Mobile phones hold around eighteen times more bacteria then toilet door handles.

9. Your mobile phone has more computing power than the computer used for the Apollo 11 moon landing.

I think that these facts are unbelievable, some of which I would never even have thought about before, which is why I am so passionate about wanting to show the negative impacts of the phone which is stopping us from living a life that is set in the present rather than online.
I am going to show analysis, contact sheets, edits, developments, information and a diagram of how I photographed each shoot (if needed). I hope you enjoy looking through this portfolio and get a real insight into the negative impacts of mobile phones.
